(CNN)Logically speaking, we should be in a perpetual state of gratitude. Most people who read this column, even if they aren’t fully aware, have a long list of blessings to count (most of the time, anyway).

Family. Friends. Love. Health. Freedom from war and natural disaster. Imagination. Community. A roof over our heads. Common decency. Hope. Opportunity. Memories. Financial stability. Favorite places. Days off work. Good weather. The golden age of television. Books. Music. Ice cream. Weekends. A friendly exchange. Something good that happened today. Something bad that didn’t happen today. A good cup of coffee.

    Good

Roses, Thorns & Buds (or RTB, among its devotees) has been part of so many family dinners since my older daughter was 4 years old that I’ve forgotten where we first heard about it. It’s quite simple: Everyone at the table takes turns sharing “roses,” which are something positive and happy-making about their day; “thorns,” which are the opposite of that; and “buds” for something we’re looking forward to and we anticipate will be a rose. Sometimes, the family meal and sharing these things itself is a rose.
Granted, the “thorn” doesn’t necessarily increase gratitude — though it’s still useful from a family discussion, empathy and problem-solving perspective. And if you can fix a problem, a rose may grow in that thorn’s place.
Here are our unscientific findings: Each time, we find that we have many roses and buds and usually only one thorn to share.
Friends have told us about effective variations on this technique, so one size doesn’t fit all. If the metaphor is too flowery for you, pick another. Home runs, strikeouts and on deck? The important thing is to connect to the thankfulness in this way, whether you do it most evenings or on the occasional weekend. It’s also an easy way for kids to get into a thankfulness habit themselves.
Happiness jars, a strategy popularized by “Eat, Pray, Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert, is something of a hybrid of gratitude journal and RTB. The idea is to write down on a slip of paper the happiest moment of the day and drop it in a jar. The advantage of doing it this way is that in moments of unhappiness, you can reach into the jar and be reminded of those moments, perhaps becoming grateful for them anew. Gilbert was struck by how many of her fans shared photos of their decorated happiness jars (see Pinterest if you need inspiration) and by how her happiest moments are “generally really common and quiet and unremarkable.”
And there are other experiments to try. You could set alarms/reminders on your phone to pause and think of something you are grateful for at different times of the day: Mornings help set the tone of the day, and reflecting while at work can be particularly useful. You can then record them on a gratitude journaling app.

Don’t miss another Wisdom Project column by subscribing here.

Or you could just focus on the simple act of saying thank you, and meaning it, more frequently. Writing letters of thanks (or emails if you want to be faster and more frequent) to those for whom you are grateful is worth doing with some regularity. You can also express gratitude with gifts, flowers and favors. Or simply make of list of all the things we take for granted but would be so unhappy to lose, such as job security, health, seeing loved ones. Review that list every week or so.
Whatever way you start infusing your life with more moments of gratitude, in the short and long term, you will be grateful that you did.

An artwork that will see visitors shrouded in artificial fog is to be part of a performance art exhibition at the Tate Modern.

Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya’s immersive “sculptures”, made from water vapour, will be staged outside the gallery’s new Switch House.

Performances by her long-term collaborators, such as dancers and drummers, will take place in the fog.

The first BMW Tate Live exhibition, to be an annual event, opens in spring.

Live installations will be created in and above the Tate Modern’s underground Tanks space, which the gallery said will “provide visitors with a distinctive location in which to engage with new art in a new way”.

    ‘Primary experience’

Nakaya, 83, has been working on a system of dispersing water vapour to create mist since the 1970s. Her father has been credited with making the first artificial snowflakes.

She said: “Walking inside fog, people are suddenly confronted with white darkness, but soon they find themselves trying to use all the senses other than the visual to orient themselves.

“People love the feel of fog on their skin, immersed, wet and cold, but gentle and soothing. It’s a primary experience.”

Her previous installations include those at Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Grand Palais in Paris.

Other works being staged as part of Ten Days Six Nights include a plant-filled room in which artist Isabel Lewis will be “combining music, food, drink and scent to create an alternative environment for dance, discussions and invited musicians”, said the Tate.

Its director of exhibitions Achim Borchardt-Hume said: “Our culture is always changing, and so exhibitions must change too.

“In our connected digital age, artists and audiences are ever more fascinated by live experiences, shared in the moment with those around them.”

The exhibition runs from 24 March to 2 April.

Kanye West was hospitalized in Los Angeles Monday, but despite reports claiming otherwise, People magazine reports the rapper was not placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold prior to being admitted.

A source told the outlet, “There was a small altercation at the gym but he was deemed medically stable and decided to seek medical help at his doctor’s request.”

“We’re super confident he’s going to pull through,” the source added.

West was admitted to the UCLA Medical Center at the beginning of the week just after canceling the remaining dates on his Saint Pablo tour. A rep for the “Fade” rapper told The New York Times he had been hospitalized for exhaustion

A source told People West “went to the hospital at will under the advice of a physician,” adding, “He’s fine.”

The source also noted that West “was not restrained” and that he went to the hospital voluntarily. However, TMZ claimed the father of two was handcuffed to a stretcher.

News of West’s hospitalization broke as his wife, Kim Kardashian, was expected to attend Denise Rich’s Angel Ball in New York City with her mom and sisters. The outing would have marked her first public appearance since being robbed at gunpoint in Paris on Oct. 3. However, upon learning of West’s health issues, Kardashian returned to Los Angeles to be with her husband.

According to a source who spoke to People, “Kim is being amazing. As are all of his friends and team and inner circle.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to a representative for Kanye West and will update this post accordingly.

Neo-soul singer Erykah Badu embodies a level of grace, wisdom and love we should all strive to achieve.

And on Monday night, she exemplified the best of these qualities during a special vegan dinner in New York City to help celebrate her as the host for the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards, which airs on BET on Sunday. The event, which was named “Vegan With Soul,” featured fabulous food and aimed to feed the mind, body and soul of the 25 journalists of color (including yours truly) Badu invited to dine with her that evening.

“I’m happy to be here in this moment,” Badu told guests. “In being able to enjoy this moment and be in it, and not be somewhere else in my mind or be sad about something or be somewhere that I don’t want to be. I’m happy to be here right now.”

The dinner was held at The Kitchen Table, a chic dining space in lower Manhattan that was decked out with incense-burning candles, dim purple lighting and kimono-wearing guests (per Badu’s request). It was an intimate scene one that came with great conversation and a menu specially curated by Afro-Vegan author and chef Bryant Terry with help from the popular culinary group Ghetto Gastro.

Badu, who has been vegan for nearly two decades, kicked off the dinner by welcoming guests and introducing Terry, who shared powerful words on the importance of coming together through food but his opener did not come without a cautious reminder: “This is not for you all, this is for Erykah,” he joked.

The savory menu came with creative and beautiful dishes that fed our bellies and our souls. It included glazed carrots, purple potato soup, barbecue tempeh and a scrumptious “Lord Help Me” spiced apple and sweet potato pie for dessert.

Terry, who spoke with People magazine’s Janine Rubenstein following the event, said: “My work is about celebrating the diversity of vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes and expanding people’s notions of African-American cuisine.”

These names are taking me out. #VeganWithSoul #SoulTrain

The table buzzed with conversation and laughter as we wined and dined. But the night didn’t end without playing a fun game or two. For the first game, guests were asked to participate in a more playful challenge by selecting celebrity names from a hat and sharing one thing we believe they may be thankful for. Folks were fully engaged as names included everyone from Beyoncé and Blac Chyna to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

But Badu ended the night in the best way by having guests play a game aptly titled “Love, Soul and Peace.” The game prompted people to share one thing that drives their happiness, one person or thing that they could live without and one thing that they love most about themselves.

Badu played along and expressed thanks to her family, wished death to all mosquitoes and relished the fact that she is a compassionate and giving woman.

If nothing else, Monday night proved this all the more.

It’s practically a fact: One taste of Patti LaBelle’s cooking may result in a person shouting: “C’mon Patti!”

LaBelle, whose sweet potato pie craze resulted in record sales last year, is set to debut her new show “Patti LaBelle’s Place,” on the Cooking Channel next month.

The hour-long cooking series, which initially aired last year for two episodes, will feature the Philadelphia native showing off her culinary skills alongside her celebrity friends.

In celebration of Thanksgiving next week, we caught up with the legendary singer as she dished about her new series, tips for dealing with holiday stress, and the greatest lesson she’s has learned from the demand of her sweet potato pies.

What can fans expect from the upcoming season of “Patti LaBelle’s Place”?

I’m surrounded by nice friends of mine like Gayle King, and 50 Cent, Erica Campbell (of Mary Mary), Kirk Franklin and his wife, J.R. Smith (from the Cleveland Cavaliers), and others… I’m a cook, it’s as simple as that. And I’ve always wanted to entertain people as far as my kitchen and my cooking.

How do you think food brings people together?

It’s sort of like good music and if you hear something and you say, ‘Ooo, I like that,’ and the person right across from you says ‘I like that too,’ they love the same music. And I do believe most of us love the same food, especially if it’s quality food. So we sit around a table and talk about how great it is, and after I cook if they don’t tell me that it’s awesome then I’mma have to pimp slap them. You better say you love it [laughs].

With Thanksgiving upon us, what are you most thankful for this year?

That I am still living. Every morning you wake up and you have an alignment, something hurts you that bothers you and you’re afraid to go to the doctors to get checkups and when you do, most of the time it’s positive that you’re OK. And I say thank God for this day of waking up and the only thing that bothers me is my throat being a little hoarse. I appreciate life, and that’s a blessing just to wake up.

Thanksgiving falls right after a tense election. Do you feel families should have open discussions about the issues currently affecting our country?

They better. I mean, why not, it’s in your face. You know that what you might have wanted to happen on that Tuesday night [election night], Wednesday morning didn’t happen… some of us were not happy, but we have to live with this. Pray that [Donald Trump] might change into a different person and do some positive things for people.

And so Thanksgiving is the day to give thanks and grace to being able to have a meal. And then we are all aware of the world’s situations even talk about it with the kids there, because it’s affecting everyone’s thoughts. So I think it should be a Thanksgiving of chit-chat, of things that can be better in our lives and pray for goodness. Pray that [Trump] has a change of heart.

    HuffPost

Last year around this time, your famous brand of sweet potato pies went viral and made headlines for selling out at Walmart. What was the biggest lesson that you learned from the experience?

It’s a lesson that I really wanted to learn, that if you put your heart and quality in what you do, things will get better for you. And my quality in those pies, they were just great pies and they still are, because they’re still selling year round. And that’s perseverance and believing that what you do is the best that you can do and when it starts developing, and people start loving them, I say thank you dear God again.

What are some of the latest additions to your line of desserts at Walmart?

I have the greatest peach cobbler, it tastes like I made it [laughs]. It tastes like your mother made it. It’s just so good that you just wanna smack somebody because it’s really excellent. The apple cobbler, blueberry cobbler, pecan apple cake. We’re coming out with a no sugar added sweet potato pie, a sweet potato pie with pecans, and a lot of other things that I can’t talk about. But that food train is moving, honey. And I’m happy to be on board [laughs].

James Wright Chanel’s viral review contributed to the pies’ success. Do you have plans to feature him in future marketing efforts for your desserts?

I would never want him to do that again, because that was a great surprise. To have him do something for the peach cobbler would be redundant. It’s like, ‘Patti planned that sweet potato mess,’ but I didn’t. That was sweet potato goodness. And because of James a lot of people got into the pie even more. But he’s so much fun. I’m gonna see him soon.

One of your most memorable holiday performances was at the 1996 White House Christmas tree lighting ceremony, where you discovered your background singers and cue cards were missing. What were some your thoughts during the performance?

Chile, that was such a shock, but then you know that you got to keep on keepin’ on. I said ‘whatever happens, happens. So I just have to keep on singing’ [Laughs].

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

“Patti LaBelle’s Place” premieres Dec. 3 on the Cooking Channel.

(CNN)From Adele and Michelle Obama to Lady Gaga and Madonna, it seems everyone loves singing along with James Corden.

So much so, the king of karaoke has been tapped to host the 2017 Grammy Awards.
CBS announced Tuesday that Corden will take over Grammy duties for LL Cool J, who has hosted the awards show since 2012.
A self-described music superfan, Corden’s hugely successful “Carpool Karaoke” series, which features the host driving around with celebrities while they belt out their favorite tunes, has amassed more than 1 billion views on YouTube.
This summer, Corden hosted the Tony Awards, where he showcased his acting, singing, dancing and comedic skills.
While Corden’s success has accelerated since taking over for Craig Ferguson on “The Late Late Show” in 2015, he’s been honing his craft for years.
Corden began acting in his native England as a teen. He created and co-starred in the BBC sitcom, “Gavin & Stacey,” has performed on Broadway and appeared in films.
“I am truly honored to be hosting the Grammys,” Corden said in a statement. “It’s the biggest, most prestigious award show in music and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible night.”
The 59th annual Grammy Awards will air February 12 on CBS.

(CNN)Drama, drama, drama — and we’re not just talking about Mike Pence’s weekend. Here’s what you need to know to Get Up to Speed and Out the Door.

      1. Trump 2016

Just hours after Donald Trump agreed to pay $25 million to settle his outstanding Trump University lawsuits, Mike Pence got booed and called out at a Friday showing of “Hamilton.” Trump would not. let it. go. all weekend, but Pence said he was “not offended” by the cast’s statement. Meanwhile, Trump’s weekend meeting with Mitt Romney has set secretary of state rumors swirling.

        2. Police ambushes

Two police shootings rocked two cities on Sunday: First, an officer in San Antonio was shot during a traffic stop in what is being described as a “targeted killing.” Later, a St. Louis officer was shot while in his car. The gunman was killed after a police pursuit, and the wounded officer is expected to survive.

        3. Syria

Around 300 people have been killed in the last week in Syria in what has been described as the most intense bombings there in five years. Things were relatively quiet in the three weeks preceding this violence, but now Syrian regime forces are pounding the city yet again.

        4. Dakota Access Pipeline

Crowds protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota on Sunday got a little unruly, setting two trucks and parts of a bridge on fire. Police bombarded about 400 protesters with tear gas and water, and officials describe the scene as an “ongoing riot.” Critics say the DAPL, an oil pipeline that would run across four states, will endanger the environment and Native American lands, and possibly contaminate water supplies.

        5. Philippines

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte (the guy who called President Obama a “son of a b****”) has made some interesting moves as of late. He met with Vladimir Putin over the weekend and praised the Russian president’s leadership. Could this be evidence of Duterte’s intent to align with Russia and China? Here’s more on this outspoken, unrepentant leader.
